How Muang Thong Thani Became a Home for Asian Tours

Looking at the concerts held in the IMPACT area since 2023, it's clear that this venue doesn't just host large Thai concerts. It has become a regular stop for Asian tours across nearly every genre, from world-tour-level K-pop to Japanese rock, Mandopop, and Western pop and rock artists.

The two halls fans hear about most often are IMPACT Arena and Thunder Dome. Both are in the same complex but operate at different scales. IMPACT Arena is a large indoor arena used for world tours that sell tens of thousands of tickets, while Thunder Dome is a mid-sized hall suited to fan concerts, fan meetings, and tours with audiences in the thousands. Many acts start at Thunder Dome before moving up to IMPACT Arena on their next visit.

Korea and the K-pop Scene

This is the group with the most events at these two halls, spanning girl groups, boy bands, solo artists, and bands.

One notable pattern is that from October to November 2024, Korean events lined up almost every weekend, including YUGYEOM, (G)I-DLE, CHANYEOL, Bang Yedam, and WayV. Early 2025 was similarly packed.

Japan

Japanese events come less frequently than Korean ones, but they tend to be Asia-level tours that sell tickets quickly.

China and Mandopop

Both events were held at IMPACT Arena. Dylan Wang's concert took place in late December, a period when the Muang Thong Thani area also hosts overlapping trade exhibitions, so extra travel time should be planned.

Western

Most Western acts play IMPACT Arena, since these are large-scale tours that come with full production setups.

Thai events are the backbone that keeps these two halls busy with concerts throughout the year, including major label concerts, solo artists, and multi-artist shows.

Counting only IMPACT Arena and Thunder Dome, two acts have performed twice within less than 2 years: IVE and (G)I-DLE. Both followed the same path, starting at Thunder Dome in 2023 and returning to IMPACT Arena in 2024. IVE played Thunder Dome on July 8-9, 2023, before returning to IMPACT Arena on January 27, 2024. (G)I-DLE played Thunder Dome on July 15, 2023, then returned to IMPACT Arena on October 19, 2024.

As for annual events, GMMTV held STARLYMPIC at IMPACT Arena in both 2023 and 2024, while GRAMMY and RS concerts landed at IMPACT Arena 3 times between 2023 and 2024. There were also 3 Korean solo artists who got IMPACT Arena within a close time frame: MARK TUAN, YUGYEOM, and JAY B.

What Fans Should Know: Getting There, Entering the Hall, and Getting Home

Muang Thong Thani is along Chaeng Watthana Road. If driving, take the Srirat Expressway and exit at the Muang Thong Thani exit, which is the most direct route into the area on busy days. If using public transport, check the Pink Line on the Chaeng Watthana side and connect to local transport into the area, or use the buses and vans that run into Muang Thong Thani.

One thing first-time visitors often misjudge is timing. On days with major concerts at IMPACT Arena, traffic starts to build up from the afternoon, and parking zones near the hall fill up quickly. Arrive at least 2 hours early if you need to queue for merchandise or if there are activity booths at the venue. Another thing to plan for is the trip home. When tens of thousands of people leave the hall at the same time, calling a ride-hailing app in the first few minutes after the show usually means a long wait. It's easier to sit down and get something to eat for 30 to 45 minutes to let the crowd thin out before calling a ride.

Rain is also worth planning for, since the IMPACT area is large and requires walking between buildings. Rain is frequent from mid-year through the end of the year, so carrying a foldable umbrella or rain jacket in your bag is a good idea. And if you can choose your accommodation, a covered walkway makes a big difference on a rainy night.

If you're planning to watch a concert and don't want to risk traffic on the way home, staying overnight in the area is a worthwhile option. Novotel Bangkok IMPACT connects to IMPACT Challenger via a covered walkway, about a 3-minute walk, ideal for those who don't want to get wet in the rain or drag luggage in the sun. ibis Bangkok IMPACT is about a 5-minute walk to IMPACT Arena and Thunder Dome, which directly suits fans attending events at these two halls. After the concert, you can walk straight back to your room without competing for a ride with thousands of other people. It's also convenient for groups to meet up before the event.

Planning for the Next Event

The pattern seen in the 2023 to 2025 data is fairly consistent: IMPACT Arena hosts world tours and major label concerts, Thunder Dome hosts fan concerts and mid-sized tours, while the Exhibition Hall and IMPACT Challenger host events that need flexible standing space. If you're buying tickets for an upcoming event, check which hall it's in first, since parking spots, entry gates, and when you should leave home differ quite a bit.
